Don Mohanlal Receives Inaugural Global Influential Leaders Award

“Mohanlal is in the august company of Walmart Founder Sam Walton, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deloitte Global CEO Punit Renjen, Citi Bank CEO Mark Mason, LEGO Group President and CEO Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, and several other eminent leaders for making an impact in the world through their business acumen, leadership, or entrepreneurial success.”

This statement was included in the announcement Global Influential Leader Award for ISB Alumnus published by the Indian School of Business on September 22, 2015.

We are proud and most warmly congratulate our longtime friend and Board member Don „Mohan“ Mohanlal for this outstanding award. We feel that he well deserved it for his many achievements as a nonprofit leader in youth development work throughout the world.

Mohan’s Journey

Born in Sri Lanka, Mohan first came to the United States on an AFS scholarship at the age of seventeen and spent a school year in Hastings, Nebraska. Upon his return he studied in Colombo and served as volunteer National Director of AFS in Sri Lanka.

In 1977 he returned to the USA and worked over a decade for AFS, starting in what was at the time the International Department and eventually serving as Executive Vice President. During this time he also began building his tremendous network.

In 1990 he left New York for Battle Creek, Michigan, to become the first professional staff member of the International Youth Foundation (IYF); he was instrumental in building it into a well-recognized organization and establishing its worldwide network of youth-centered foundations in over 60 countries. He served IYF as COO and Executive Vice President until 2005.

Next, Mohan’s journey took him and his family to live in India where he became CEO of the Nabha Foundation in 2006, an affiliate of the Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation which he also headed from 2007 to 2014. After his move back to the United States, he remained on the Board of the Khemka Foundation, serving as Vice Chair.

In January 2014 Mohan joined the National 4-H Council where he took up the role of Executive Director for Innovation and Impact.

Truly intercultural, Mohan is married to Maria Angelica, a native of Paraguay and former YFU exchange student. Together they are raising their twin teenage sons, Pramuk and Malik.
