In Memoriam Jürgen H. Blankenburg

Wir trauern um einen Freund und einen Visionär – um einen Menschen, der für den Jugendaustausch gelebt hat. Jürgen Blankenburg, Spiritus Rector und Ehrenpräsident der AFS Stiftung, war immer für die jungen Menschen da, immer mit dem festen Glauben, dass Austausch und Verständigung zu einer besseren Welt führen. Er hinterlässt eine grosse Lücke, aber auch einen unermesslichen Schatz an Erinnerungen und Wissen.

Jürgen Blankenburg war ein AFSer durch und durch – ein AFS-Austauschschüler von Duisburg nach Birmingham, Alabama, im Jahr 1952/53, eine Schlüsselfigur in AFS Deutschland während mehr als 25 Jahren, AFS Trustee in New York von 1993 bis 2000, damals auch Vorsitzender des Finanzausschusses, und Mitglied des Ausschusses für Risikomanagement bis 2004.

Vor seinem beruflichen Hintergrund als Risikomanager und Versicherungsmakler sowie mit dem besorgten Blick auf die Gefahren, die auch Organisationen wie AFS betreffen, initiierte er die Gründung einer Stiftung, die einerseits die Marke, andererseits das Vermächtnis von AFS schützen würde. 2004 war er der Gründungspräsident der AFS Stiftung. Er führte die Stiftung bis 2012, als er von seinem Amt zurücktrat; in Anerkennung seiner Pionierleistungen wurde er zum Ehrenpräsidenten ernannt.

Jürgen Blankenburg war – nicht nur physisch – eine herausragende Persönlichkeit. Er scheute sich nicht, auch unangenehme Fragen zu stellen und Antworten zu suchen. Er kämpfte immer für seine Überzeugungen. Ebenso war er ein leidenschaftlicher Kunstsammler und eine wichtige Stütze verschiedener Kulturinstitutionen in seiner Heimatstadt – in Hamburg. 2009 wurde ihm der Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Bundesverdienstkreuz) verliehen.

Wir werden seinen Charme, seinen Humor, seinen Optimismus und seine Lebenserfahrung vermissen. Wir werden hüten und pflegen, was er geschaffen und was er uns gelehrt hat – für AFS, für die Jugend und für einen offenen Blick auf die Welt.

Jurgen era una gran bella persona

I met Jurgen for the first time at an AFS World Congress many years ago: he was then the chair of the finance committee; he made a speech on the strategy that AFS should follow in the future that I liked very much, because it was clear, realistic, creative and intelligent. Since then, I had the privilege to work with him on many different AFS matters: even more so when he established the AFS Foundation and chaired it for almost 10 years. As it frequently happens when people who work together find themselves on the same wavelength, the business relationship became a friendship, which allowed me to see his personal side: his love for art, his philanthropy, his deep culture. In Italian, I would summarize all this in a couple of words: „Jurgen era una gran bella persona“ , which poorly translates into Jurgen was a wonderful person.

Very sad to hear the news of Jurgen’s passing. We all shared great times together at Trustee meetings. His wisdom and extensive business experience were extraordinarily important in guiding the AFS community through the early days of partnership. Many of the features of the network that underpin the strength of AFS today were the direct result of his insights and keen understanding of how best to balance the risks and opportunities of this new world. His love of AFS was palpable and deeply connected to the history of his own country and the generosity of others who had brought him to the US in the early 50s. He led a wonderful life and I treasure the memories of the times we spent together.
